Shock discovery found in item of clothing- Exposing the dirty truth behind fashion.
Mary Simmons, a fourteen year old student from Surrey, had a shocking discovery after her weekend shop with friends. "I bought a brand new denim jacket. Spent around £20 for it."
Adding "After I brought my shopping bags home, I went through them all and decided to try on the denim jacket. I was surprised to notice a small piece of card inside that had been written on... I was not sure whether it was a prank or simply a mistake. However, I quickly realised this was not the case once I read the writing. I knew that I needed to do something."
The note that Mary found read:"Hear us out. We are in danger. We work long hours and are exploited... please help us." On the back of the note it read "We write from Dangshi Garment Factory , Bangladesh."
The note was later confirmed by authorities as a reflection of child labour and the details behind the note have shown that it was written with the intention to expose the conditions behind the workers. Upon further investigation it was discovered that minors are forced to work thirteen hour shifts, crammed into confined spaces that are simply cruel and unsafe.
Similar issues have surfaced in recent years, such as the infamous Rana Plaza Disaster of 2013 which resulted in over 1,000 deaths and thousands more fatally injured.
"Awareness of the terrible working conditions of sweatshops has been shocking to us as Western consumers. Just under seven years ago we had the eight-storey building collapse in the Rana Plaza. It is just heartbreaking to be so oblivious to the harm that goes on behind the scenes. Whilst to us we are just buying clothes" claims Kimberly Marshall a student from London.
A statement has been released by the International Association of Child Protection, in response to the shocking note.
